Tips

Use more colors than you initially want to. The brown bear's face had many shades of brown, plus black, two oranges for the highlights, and white to blend. ​The grass had many shades of green, plus yellow, brown, and black. Going over colors with other colors makes it richer.

The white colored pencil is your friend. However, you can also use other light pencils to do the job without washing out the color. For example, I used light tan for the white bear and light green to blend the large bush in the back.

Sketch everything out with a pencil. Then, when you start drawing, erase the pencil because it often doesn't erase under light colored pencils and might look sloppy later.

The whole background doesn't have to be detailed. Adding just a few carefully placed details and highlights gives the illusion that the general area is detailed.
